Post-Jam Devlog

Waaah! This was a solo project and I'm surprised at how cohesive it came out.

What went right:

  • I like the simple peg doctor design. It was simple to model and stood out once I gave just the mask an emissive.
  • Lighting gave me the most trouble but I like the mood it sets
  • I managed to work in 3 "endings". Simple endings but could be the start of something more interesting.

What got lost in the dark:

  • The horror and puzzle elements. The original idea was to have spooky events triggering as the player went around the map. Picking up and putting down the light was going to be a more integral part of the gameplay. I was only able to implement the light aspect in the last ending condition.
  • More robust dialogue. Despite using it once, I'm learning more and more every time I use Yarn.
  • Movement and map design. The movement is clunky and the buttons to interact is not optimized. Maybe a controller scheme would be better here? There is also a slow start before the player picks up enough velocity to move. The other issue I had was the player losing view of the doctor if they went behind an object. I need to look into how other fixed-angle-camera games handle this. The cheap solution was to block off areas with fence posts.

This was so much fun to do and if I get time before Halloween, I might be able to weave in some of those fixes!
